IGCP-724 Project Leaders’ Meeting and Workshop was Held in July, 2025
IGCP-724 project leaders’ meeting and workshop was convened on July 9th in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. In addition to the project's core members, the meeting also invited Professor Yuji Sano from Japan, Professor Fu Ching-chou from the Taiwan region of China, and Professor Zheng Guodong from China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) as special guests to participate in the discussions.
On this meeting, the project secretary presented the evaluation results of the IGCP-724 project for 2024 by the IGCP Committee of the UNESCO, summarized the project's key achievements over the past three years and outlined plans for subsequent work of the project. Each project leader took the floor in turn, presenting on the role of fluid geochemistry in earthquake monitoring within their respective countries, the bottlenecks encountered, and potential future breakthroughs. Other participating experts provided commentary on the project's outcomes, identifying shortcomings and offering targeted suggestions. All attendees agreed that the IGCP project provides an excellent platform for exchange and communication among global earthquake fluid researchers. They emphasized the continued need for extensive international collaboration in the future to contribute insights towards solving the world-class challenge of earthquake forecasting.
This meeting was held during the “International Symposium on Earthquake Forecasting to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the 1975 Haicheng M7.3 Earthquake”. The Symposium attracted over 300 earthquake researchers, including more than 100 participants from outside China. As is widely known, the Haicheng Earthquake is globally recognized as the first successful imminent prediction of a large earthquake which played a crucial role in mitigating regional earthquake disasters. Seismic fluid monitoring made significant contributions to this big event. Platformed by the IGCP-724 project, this conference established Session 12 named “Earthquake scientific investigation, case studies, and earthquake prediction”. IGCP-724 project leaders Li Ying, Antonio Caracausi, and Giovanni Martinelli served as co-conveners of the session. The session attracted extensive participation from researchers across multiple countries, including Italy, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Greece, and Myanmar. Professor Galip Yuce, Giovanni Martinelli, Yuji Sano, and Ching-chou Fu all shared their recent findings.
